20th APR 2016; Fencing the Dareshekran Camp
ERBIL, Iraq – April 20, 2016 – Darashakran Refugee Camp, now home to over 7,000 Syrian refugees, can breathe a sigh of relief as phase three and part of phase four of its perimeter fencing project have been completed. Collaborating with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Kurdish non-governmental organization (NGO) KURDS NGO has successfully erected the vital fencing, offering increased security and stability for displaced families within the camp.
Located in Khabat, Erbil, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Darashakran Camp opened in 2013 to accommodate refugees fleeing the Syrian conflict, primarily from Aleppo and Qamishli. Initially intended for 20,000 residents, the camp now houses families relocated from other transit camps within the region. The completed fencing, constructed with American materials, ensures a safer and more controlled environment for the camp's population, particularly vulnerable women and children.
"For families who have endured the trauma of displacement, a sense of security is paramount," stated a UNHCR spokesperson.
