KURDS NGO Constructs New UNHCR Office at Zelikan Camp1, Offering Refuge and Hope to Vulnerable Mosul IDPs
ERBIL, Iraq – Jan 7th, 2017 – Nestled amidst the harsh realities of displacement, a beacon of hope has arisen at Zelikan Refugee Camp in Iraq. The Kurdish non-governmental organization (NGO) KURDS NGO has successfully completed the construction of the main United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office, bringing crucial aid and administrative services closer to a particularly vulnerable population – internally displaced persons (IDPs) recently fleeing Mosul and surrounding villages.
Since June 2014, these families have endured the harrowing reality of life under the control of armed groups. Isolation from the rest of Iraq and limited access to basic necessities like food, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities have compounded their suffering. Now, with the arrival of 32 families (144 individuals) from Chanchi and Derik villages in Zelikan Camp, the need for accessible support has become even more pressing.
Recognizing this urgent need, KURDS NGO took initiative in December 2016, embarking on the construction of the new UNHCR office. Completed in January 2017, this vital facility stands as a testament to their dedication to improving the lives of displaced communities.
The new UNHCR office serves as a lifeline for Mosul IDPs in Zelikan Camp. No longer burdened by long and arduous journeys, they can now readily access essential services like registration, documentation, and information within the camp itself. The secure and dedicated space allows UNHCR staff to conduct interviews, assessments, and case management with greater efficiency, ensuring targeted and effective delivery of humanitarian aid.
"For families who have borne the brunt of conflict and displacement, this new UNHCR office offers a glimmer of hope," stated a UNHCR spokesperson. "By removing barriers to critical services, we can empower them to rebuild their lives with dignity and resilience."
KURDS NGO's commitment extends beyond the construction project. They remain actively involved in providing a range of essential services to Zelikan Camp residents, including education, healthcare, and livelihood support. Their ongoing collaboration with UNHCR embodies the vital role played by local NGOs in supporting the humanitarian response in Iraq.
As displaced families from Mosul find refuge and assistance within the walls of the new UNHCR office, Zelikan Camp becomes a symbol of hope and resilience. This collaborative effort between UNHCR and KURDS NGO stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment to supporting vulnerable communities during times of crisis.
